News Update April 28
Posted 29 April 2020, 1:30 pm NDT
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have been helping to keep our community safe.
To the residents who are helping to keep our employees safe by keeping garbage pickup to a minimum, and to those who take time to put garbage in Town truck at Community Center. This allows staff to continue garbage pickup while still following safety and self distancing protocol.
To CRB who have stepped up to the plate to ensure services are maintained, with safety at the forefront.
To our homebased businesses who had to temporarily close, we miss you!
To the NWR Church Food Cupboard Committee. Call 897-4380 Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm.
To Kenny Baikie who rings the bell every Sunday at noon, to recognize our workers and residents, who are doing all they can, to help in anyway.

To Sivunivut Inuit Community Corporation for providing food delivery to NG members over 55 years of age, call 497-8444 and leave a message.

Despite Covid-19 taking center stage for this past while, we would like to thank all residents who have made the extra effort to pay their tax bills. To those residents who are in arrears, and are not on yet on payment plan, please call or email the office, these cases will be looked at individually. Due date April 30th.

We are a community always looking ahead, and as they say "the show must go on".

-Approval to tender the road work and paving for this summer has been issued by Department of Municipal Works and Environment (DMAE).
-New Little Lake Lift Station is still scheduled for next month, materials are on the way.
-Bell Aliant has applied to CRTC to provide Fibre Op to North West River.
-Wastewater study still scheduled to be concluded by end of June.
-Funding to build an extension on Town Shop has been received from the Provincial Government, Community Healthy Living Fund.
-A BIG thanks to 5 Wing Goose Bay who has donated and delivered all the remaining boards and top plate for the rink, and to Iliget Community Partnerships Inc. who help cover the cost of a zamboni for the rink. We hope to have a nice thank you "get together" when we can.

It looks like we are having an early spring. Although some workplace restrictions are in place, we will start the season again with community safety/recreation improvements starting with Portage Road beach access point. Last year we constructed a road for residents who live on beach Road, so they did not need to use the beach to enter their property. This year we will start with the resources we have to create a temporary barricade to ensure vehicles are kept off the beach. In the meantime, we have been working with "Healthy Water Labrador" (HWL) to secure funds to develop a long term plan for our beach. This is not a financial commitment for the Town, but the opportunity to work with HWL to help keep our Labrador waters healthy. Just as they have helped us with preparing for our wastewater study, we now ask for their help with this project. We will keep you informed, and will reach out for any input you may have, as we move forward.

We plan on having a Regular Council meeting by mid May. At this point still, the public would have to attend remotely. We will send out an update soon regarding the date, and the particulars of attending.

In closing we would like to say how fortunate we are to live in Labrador. We went from the first three cases of COVID-19 in the province, to a flattening. We ask that you not become complacent just yet, but be informed daily and continue to show your commitment and discipline, through social distancing and proper hygiene. We really do take care of each other, and we will continue to do so, beyond COVID-19.
