News Update August 24
Posted 26 August 2020, 9:59 am NDT
Well summer is almost over for another year. We had a different summer this year in a couple of ways, lots of good warm weather, a welcomed change from the past few years, and of course we are still adapting to living within the parameters of COVID 19.
We remain fortunate here in Labrador, however, as you know, this is not the case in many other parts of our country, and things can change fast here, as well. We ask all to remain vigilant and adhere to provincial the guidelines. As you are aware as of August 24, masks will be mandatory in all indoor public places, for everyone over 5 years old. With school scheduled to start next month, this will bring new learning environment for parents, children and teachers. Masks will be required on school bus, however if social distancing can be maintained in classroom then masks will not be required. We are fortunate once again, not to have overcrowding in our classrooms. Remember to wash hands often as best defense. The special orders measures released by Dr. Janice Fitzgerald regarding masks is linked at end of this newsletter.
The town office is available by appointments daily 9 – 4:30, please call in advance. The next regular council meeting will be Thursday August 27th, at 7:00 pm. Anyone wishing to attend by telephone, can contact town office prior for call-in number.
Our Garbage collection will remain the same, Wednesday downtown Thursday uptown. We ask all to put garbage on side of road 8:00 am on day of pickup. Garbage can still be dropped off at the dumpster located next to fire hall, remember household garbage only. There all still a few compost bins available at the office for $20.00.
Our students (Joseph, Reed) and Green Team (McKenzie, Willa) are finished for this year. Many improvements got done on the trails, beach and parks in town. Awesome Work Guys! The next phase of this project will continue next season. We are pleased to say that Nunatukavut Community Council has donated $45000.00 for the next phase of our beach project. A BIG Thanks!
As we switch gears for winter, we will be putting the final touches on the rink and building a piece on back of the shop next to rink. This will be a warming up spot and a place to house the Zamboni which we hope to get this winter. The recreation committee will be reaching out to local businesses for sponsorship of company logos on rink boards. All money raised will go toward the purchase of the Zamboni.
As for our Capital Works projects, our long-awaited new lift station at Little Lake is completed and fully operational. The final touches on the new pumphouse and water control system is completed. Our paving projects for Airstrip and Paddon/Montague is out to tender, and we are still hoping to have work completed before winter.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone for keeping our community safe and healthy. With children heading back to school, please keep an extra eye out for their safety.
